WHAT WE DO

Volunteer Tutoring

Love Literacy mobilizes the community to support children’s literacy by recruiting and training  community volunteers  to provide free one-on-one reading instruction to children in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools who are significantly below grade level in reading. Our tutors go where the need is the greatest.

Individualized Instruction

Love Literacy tutors work with students twice a week for 30 minutes. We assess all students at the beginning and end of the year and monitor student progress throughout the year. Our tutors use a research-based and evidenced-based curriculum that meets students where they are and helps develop critical reading skills – phonemic awareness, reading and spelling skills, and reading fluency.

Tutor Training

Become a volunteer tutor and help a child learn to read. We provide everything that you and your student need to ensure success! Love Literacy tutors complete a 2-day training and receive up to 23 hours of training per year. Love Literacy site coordinators are on-site weekly to observe lessons, monitor student/tutor progress, and provide coaching and support to tutors as necessary. The impact of assuming this role can be profound. Take the next step.

Upcoming Information Session

We will resume info sessions in July

Attending an information is required before attending a training session.

Upcoming Training Session

Dates TBD for the Fall

Due to the increased need for volunteer tutors to help students learn to read, all tutor fees will be waived.

Tutor Resources

In addition to training, we support our volunteers with tutoring resources.

Tutoring Opportunities

Currently Love Literacy matches individual volunteer tutors with students identified by WS/FCS. In 2024, volunteer opportunities will expand into the critical areas of early childhood education, before and after school programs and summer programs.
