Get Rowdy for READWS

Did you know that Forsyth County is in a literacy crisis? 48% of children in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools cannot read proficiently, and ⅗ of the children in this community are not college and career ready. In addition, the achievement gap between White children and Black and Hispanic children is wide. Only 38.2% of African American third graders and 32.8% of Hispanic third graders are reading proficiently, compared to 76.5% of white third graders. READWS is hosting its first awareness event in the spring, Get Rowdy for READWS. This event will be held at Wise Man Brewing located at 826 Angelo Bros Avenue, Winston Salem, NC 27101 on April 28, 2018, from 12 – 6 pm. There will be a silent auction, a raffle, food trucks, live music, and children’s activities. The goal of this event is to raise awareness about the literacy crisis in Forsyth County and the work that we do to reach, teach, and advocate for children that struggle with reading. In addition, we would like to raise funds to help support our programs so that we can continue to change lives through educator training, parent education, and volunteer tutor training.
