Become a Tutor

Read Write Spell mobilizes the community to support children’s literacy by
recruiting and training volunteers to provide free one-on-one reading instruction to
economically disadvantaged students in WS/FCS. You can become a volunteer
tutor and help a child learn to read.

A tutor and her student

Our tutors complete a two-day training and work with students twice a week for 30 minutes. Our materials are research-based and evidenced-based, and provide instruction in:

  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Reading and Spelling Skills
  • Reading Fluency

We serve children in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools that have been identified as needing extra support with literacy. WS/FCS identifies students based on assessment data and teacher input.

We provide everything that you and your student need to ensure success. Our next training sessions will begin in September. Sign up for our next online volunteer information session below to learn more about the details.
